Early in his career, Heath Ledger had major relationships with actresses Lisa Zane, Julia Stiles, Heather Graham, Kate Hudson and Naomi Watts.
In 2004, he began dating actress Michelle Williams on the set of Brokeback Mountain. Their daughter, Matilda Rose, was born 28 October 2005 in New York City. Matilda's godparents are Brokeback co-star Jake Gyllenhaal and Williams' Dawson's Creek co-star Busy Philipps. Though initially Heath wanted his new family to live part-time in Australia, he put his residence in Bronte-New South Wales up for sale because of paparazzi harassment, and returned to the United States, where he shared a house with Michelle and his daughter, in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, NYC from 2005 to 2007.
In September 2007, Williams' father confirmed to Sydney's Daily Telegraph that Heath and Michelle ended their relationship. After Heath’s death, news outlets reported that his drug abuse had prompted Williams to request that he move out of the home they shared in Brooklyn.
After the break-up with Williams, in late 2007 to early 2008, tabloid press and other media linked Heath with Mary-Kate Olsen and Australian model Helen Gemma Ward until his death.
